“Time Sensitive” – Our Summer Art Exhibition Series Finale
Art, Power, Equity and J. Walcher Communications Announce Final “Curator-in-Residence” Show Featuring Mexican, Interdisciplinary Artist David Mont Virgen
SAN DIEGO – ART POWER EQUITY (APE) – an arts-based enterprise that supports underrepresented artists and promotes equity, access and opportunity in the creative economy – and long-time public relations and marketing firm, J. Walcher Communications (JWC) – have announced their final “Curator-in-Residence” art show this summer with San Diego/Tijuana based interdisciplinary artist David Mont Virgen.
Opening with an artist talk, reception and viewing on Saturday, August 24, from 6-9 p.m. at JWC’s historic offices in Sherman Heights, Mont Virgen’s exhibition “Time Sensitive” explores the depths of self-reflection and the complexities of the human experience through sculpture and painting. The show is open to the public every Saturday from 1-4 p.m. from August 24 through September 14, and during the week by appointment only.
The artist residency is the evolution of APE and JWC’s “Curator-in-Residence” partnership that began in 2021. JWC provides a dedicated exhibition space with each artist selecting the next artist in the series; Mont Virgen was selected by printmaker Kelvin Lopez, who in turn was selected by painter and fiber sculptor Katie Ruiz.
Mont Virgen embraces metal as his chosen medium and skillfully transforms it into a powerful metaphor, reminding us of our inherent solidity and manageability, and finding a delicate but perfect balance between the two. His work serves as an invitation into the realm of reflection, where apparent opposites can find connection, becoming two sides of the same coin.
As a Mexican visual artist, Mont Virgen’s work transcends geographical boundaries, working and creating between the vibrant cities of Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California. His work has also been exhibited internationally, including Madrid, Mexico City, Milan and Paris.
“Empowering and trusting artists to select who will follow them in the exhibition series was one of the best decisions we’ve made,” said founder and curator Kamaal Martin. “JWC is an ideal partner and through the example of this project, I believe our model can be replicated throughout San Diego and make an incredible impact.”
APE establishes relationships with BIPOC artists and art professionals to develop projects and exhibitions that cultivate, promote and showcase those who meet at the intersections of under-representation, economic vulnerability and community development.
“We love seeing our office transform with every new artist’s vision for the space. It’s important for us to support the work of BIPOC artists through our business,” said Jean Walcher, president and founder of JWC.
