Art, Power, Equity Announces New Partnership with J. Walcher Communications

Art, Power, Equity Partners with J. Walcher Communications for Curator-in-Residence Shows

First Show Features Painter, Sculpture, Multi-media Artist Jean Cornwell-Wheat

SAN DIEGO (June 3, 2021)Art, Power, Equity – an arts-based enterprise that supports underrepresented artists and promotes equitable arts-oriented development – and long-time public relations and marketing firm, J. Walcher Communications (JWC) – have announced a “Curator-in-Residence” partnership from June through August 2021. JWC will provide a dedicated exhibition space within its historic Queen Anne Victorian offices in Sherman Heights, with the first show of local painter, sculptor, and multi-media artist Jean Cornwell-Wheat.

Art, Power, Equity establishes relationships with local and regional artists and art professionals to develop projects and exhibitions that cultivate, promote, and showcase those who meet at the intersections of under-representation, economic vulnerability, and community development.

“People often associate art with freedom, but in fact is often transactional and exploitive. Our goal at Art, Power, Equity is to focus on the service and practice side of art that is rooted in culture and is functional and collective,” said Founder and Curator Kamaal Martin. “This partnership with and at JWC is a perfect step toward showcasing the transformative power of art.”

Art, Power, Equity’s first show is scheduled to take place June 5 to June 20 every Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 p.m., by appointment only. The exhibition will include an artist talk, reception and viewing with painter, sculptor, and multimedia artist Cornwell-Wheat on Saturday, June 5, 6-8 p.m., based on the loss of her studio to fire. Her new solo exhibition, “Out of the Fire” is a retrospective of what remains of her once prolific body of work. The show includes pieces created after the tragic fire swept through her scenic home and studio and several other pieces borne of the pandemic. Cornwell Wheat’s work explores themes of Black life in abstraction and with vivid colors. For more information and reservations, please visit www.artpowerequity.com or call 619-373-2039.

“As long-time art supporters and enthusiasts, we love having the opportunity to use our office to support artists and curators, especially underrepresented BIPOC artists,” said Jean Walcher, president and founder of JWC. “We look forward to welcoming people into our historic space to showcase art curated by Art, Power, Equity.”

Future shows include Andrew Alcasid in July and Nahla Valdez in August. Alcasid creates drawings, paintings, large-scale installations, and ceramics. He began creating art in the form of graffiti and street art, held a long-term artist residency Bread and Salt, and most recently held a solo exhibition at Visual Gallery. Valdez repertoire includes drawings, paintings, large-scale installations and ceramics. Valdez is a filmmaker, visual artist and founder of La Cine Femme, a community for women and feminists to address gender inequality in the film industry.
