Comic-Con Museum

Comic-Con Museum, under the umbrella of Comic-Con International, the world’s premier popular arts convention, opened in 2022 as Balboa Park’s only new Museum in the past 50 years. The Museum created a place to experience Comic-Con magic all year long – and sought local media and general awareness in San Diego and beyond.

The nonprofit hired J. Walcher Communications for comprehensive media relations; social media content creation and management; digital and print advertising; press events and exhibit previews; assisting with fundraising materials and campaigns; and more.

Notable media outreach/story angles:

  • A headline exhibit in partnership with Marvel to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Spider-Man; included national and regional media, influencer campaigns and more
  • Debuted three exhibits featuring Mexican artists in collaboration with the Office of the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego and Cross Border Xpress
  • Hosted Museum visits for 85 reporters (local and visiting) during Comic-Con 2025

The JWC team executed press events and secured key interviews on-site and in-studio for the Museum and its exhibit partners, including Marvel, the BBC, Fleisher Studios (creators of Betty Boop), Funko and tokidoki.

The Museum made an immediate impact in the San Diego-Tijuana region to showcase and celebrate Mexican comic art and creators with widespread media coverage in English and Spanish.

Its messaging and visuals reached thousands of people per month through its engaging social media channels, including Instagram, building its follower base to 27,000.

As the Museum’s popularity grew, JWC spearheaded the voting campaign for the Museum to be named “Best Pop Culture Museum” (twice!) by USA Today 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards.

The executive director praised JWC for being the best PR agency she’s ever worked with, across her experience at numerous large, national organizations and multiple PR and marketing agencies.
