About J. Walcher Communications
Celebrating 25 years as one of San Diego’s most recognized public relations and marketing agencies, J. Walcher Communications is a woman-owned boutique San Diego PR agency named by Forbes as one of the Best PR Agencies in the nation and recognized as Business for Good’s Employer of the Year. We help clients build their organizations with smart, effective campaigns that cut through the noise – substance and style over flash and fluff.
Our clients span real estate development, nonprofits and associations, social justice, tourism, professional services, hospitality, the arts and more. Clients include Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, ACLU Foundation of San Diego & Imperial Counties, Invictus Games San Diego 2029 bid, Greystar and more. Our office is inside the San Diego Made Factory, a nonprofit arts collective in San Diego’s Logan Heights neighborhood. It is a creative, community-rooted environment unlike any traditional agency office.
“How do I know this is THE job for me?”
- Media relations is your first love. You’ve pitched, followed up and secured coverage locally, regionally and nationally. You know how to bring a carefully crafted story to fruition. You love to read and track media outlets – what reporters are saying and the trends they’re writing about.
- You want to do a little bit of everything: media relations, social media, digital marketing, copywriting, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO: optimizing content for AI search results), influencer relations, crisis communications, media training, advertising and more.
- Your writing moves people to action. You write a mean subject line. You shift tone and voice seamlessly. You know details matter.
- Culture matters to you. You want clients who listen and value what you do – and a team that does the same.
Responsibilities
- PR Strategy: Develop thoughtful communications plans; bring proactive, creative ideas; support clients across multiple industries
- Client Relations: Serve as a trusted extension of each client’s in-house team; manage day-to-day communications, projects and deadlines with precision; lead meetings, media trainings and interview prep
- Media Relations: Pitch and secure coverage proactively and persistently; plan and execute press conferences and media events
- Media Research: Build targeted media lists; stay current on traditional and non-traditional outlets locally, regionally and nationally
- Writing: Produce press releases, media advisories, pitches, talking points, blogs, public remarks and more
- Thought Leadership & Client Recognition: Identify and draft thought leadership pieces, award nominations and speaking opportunities
- Staff Mentorship: Provide constructive guidance and feedback; support junior staff growth and processes; receive the same support in return
- Digital Marketing: Draft e-newsletters and web content; manage and track key analytics
- Social Media: Guide strategy for social content calendars and compelling visuals; coordinate influencer relations; manage platform engagement and analytics
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of agency experience (or an equally fast-paced environment) with a strong media relations focus
- Demonstrated experience leading and managing client accounts independently
- Exceptional writing, editing and AP style skills
- Highly organized with strong deadline management
- Familiarity with PR tools (e.g. Muck Rack, Critical Mention), AI platforms (e.g. Claude), Microsoft 365 and major social media channels
- You take your work seriously, but also maintain a good dose of humor
